The breakthrough with the xbox 360 came in the form of a modified firmware applied to the 360's DVD drive. Modding your 360 will remove the media restriction that normally blocks the reading of burned disks. After modding you will be able to make backup copies of your original game disks and play them in your 360. The mod does NOT allow the use of homebrew nor does it remove the region restrcitions on a game, therefore it will only allow backup games from USA (NTSC region) to play on an NTSC console. The same goes for any other region game and its respective region console.
Modding your xbox is and always will be a risk to using xbox live. Many people are able to play online with their modded 360's without problem. However you should be aware that some people have been banned and there is the possibility of getting your console banned (different to having your account banned). That said, the Itxreme firmware incorpoates all the latest stealth features and with proper backup procedures (like those in my tutorials), the chances of you getting banned from xbox live are very low. Alternatively what some gamers do is purchase a second xbox 360 to use one for online play only with original disks and keep a second modded one for playing backups.
If you plan on playing xbox live with a modded console, I HIGHLY recommend you purchase a KREON drive to make exact 1:1 copies of your original xbox games. Downloading games is not only illegal, but you also don't know how the game was ripped and there is a MUCH higher risk of getting banned online.
